Duurzaamheid en energie-efficiëntie
Sustainability and energy efficiency
Energy efficiency plays an important role in our sustainability goals. In addition to our energy-saving projects, we also invest in the generation of renewable energy. Our Zeeland Solar solar park is almost twelve hectares, or 22 football pitches, in size and has over 28,000 solar panels. This makes it one of the largest industrial solar parks in the Netherlands.
With a capacity of 11 megawatts, the solar park provides almost a quarter of our electricity consumption on a summer’s day. Zeeland Solar produces as much electricity annually as the consumption of 4300 households – half of all households in the municipality of Borsele.
Zeeland Refinery improved company energy efficiency by 20% during the 2008–2018 period. We do not limit our sustainability efforts to our own premises, but also like to look at how we can cooperate with others.
For example, with the Sloewarmte project, the residual heat generated in our production process is used by other companies for various purposes. This not only reduces energy consumption, but also CO2 emissions.
For some years now, when replacing or renovating road lighting, a switch has been made from traditional lighting fixtures to LED fixtures. They use 80% less energy than conventional light fittings and have a life span that is five times longer. 35 per cent of the road lighting has already been replaced. LED lighting has also been shown to meet safety requirements in the dark hours inside factory plants.
For new projects or renovations, LED lighting or other energy-efficient lighting is used wherever possible. On our jetties in the Van Cittershaven, all halogen floodlights will be replaced by durable LED floodlights. This will reduce the light emission above the water. This will further reduce the total light emission from the refinery at night.
Zeeland Refinery’s policy is to limit the generation of waste as far as possible. Where possible, we reuse or recycle wood, construction and demolition waste and paper. The refining process is extremely efficient. Only a small amount of sludge (a mixture of sand, rust and oily material) remains. After extracting as much water and oil as possible, it is processed by external waste processors.
Our responsibility for the waste does not stop at the company gate. Our waste processors must be reputable, certified companies that possess all the necessary permits. We regularly audit these companies.
